B. Kosuge Wines

I met Byron Kosuge at Copain Custom Crush, where he serves as consulting winemaker for several very familiar names. I met him through Paul Sloan of Small Vines and it was Byron who oversaw the juice that went into the first--the genesis--bottling of Genese. Perhaps it was the labels on his wines that were reminiscent of the wood-block printing and the art of Ando Hiroshige, one of my many personal favorites. Perhaps it was his natural ease and unaffected demeanor...a real person! But after meeting him, I just knew I wanted to taste his wines. He is a vine hunter, similar in a sense to Chris Brockaway of Broc Cellars. Byron's approach is different, however, more transcendental. The Manchester Ridge Hudson Vineyard is in Carneros, an unexpected spot to see Syrah being made...another reason why I love this wine! Byron isn't limited by what the market says it expects. He is only limited by what the grapes will give him.
